Tumut Politics In The Pub a success!
Our GM Carlie Porteous recently represented AFCA alongside AFPA NSW and CFMEU Manufacturing NSW, hosting a successful public forum with candidates contesting the NSW electorate of Wagga Wagga at the upcoming NSW state election.
Independent Dr Joe McGirr, Liberal candidate Julia Ham and Nationals candidate Andrianna Benjamin all spoke positively about the importance of forest industries to the South West Slopes region.
Ms Porteous' presentation highlighted that the 2023 NSW election is an opportunity to support one of the electorates largest industries, forestry and fibre processing. An opportunity to implement real support to grow this critical resource with the industry facing a serious shortage of timber in the coming years, and we need more trees in the ground now.
Reports were provided to the candidates outlining the issues that our industry faces and these are provided below for your information.

Onetrak celebrates 15 years in Victoria
Onetrak is the Australian dealer for major brands Tigercat, Hidromek, Striker, Anaconda, Fuchs and Dressta. The company has locations in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland.
| |
This year Onetrak celebrates its 15th anniversary in Victoria. The first Victorian premises were located in Dandenong up until 2016 when the company relocated to 1-5 Marlo Place, in Hallam, a suburb south-east of Melbourne after having outgrown the previous workshop and office spaces.
Onetrak Hallam is always buzzing with activity, the yard is stocked with new equipment and the premises also house Onetrak’s central warehouse distribution for spare parts along with a large rental fleet that comes and goes between jobs.
Rhodes Cousland manages the rental fleet and has been with the company for just under 8 years.
“Onetrak has given me the opportunity to build Onetrak Rental from the ground up. Being a family-owned company, relationships are key to everything we do and at the core of us growing the rental fleet has been the long-standing relationships we’ve built with customers”, Rhodes Cousland, Rental Manager. Melannie Amani celebrates her own work anniversary this year having reached 10 years with the business.
“I’m working with a great team at Onetrak and know I have the support I need to carry out my job. My favourite part of my role is being able to deal with customers on a daily basis, whether it be an engineer or someone from the accounts department I’ve been able to make so many great connections so far”, Melannie Amani, Rental Co-ordinator.
Onetrak is a small but flexible company with a can-do attitude across the business. One of the key focuses within the organisation is to ensure all staff have growth and development opportunities available to them. Jotham Allwright has held a few different roles within the company.
“I’ve been lucky enough to work my way through a few different roles at Onetrak. Starting as a Field Service Technician working in the Mount Gambier area for several years, this then led into a Service Manager role looking after the service team in Mount Gambier. Now I’m lucky enough to focus on forestry equipment as Onetrak’s National Product Support Manager for Forestry”, says Jotham Allwright, National Product Support Manager for Forestry.
No two days are the same as the company services customers across construction, forestry and industrial material handling.
“The family business culture at Onetrak is what I enjoy the most. Onetrak also deals in some great products across multiple equipment brands within Construction, Forestry, Materials Handling and Mineral Processing Equipment industries. There’s never a dull day and the opportunities are endless. I’ve always enjoyed a challenge, developing product performance solutions and management systems is what I like to do and at Onetrak innovation is always encouraged”, Faysal Berdilek, National Product Support Manager.
Being a national company there is opportunity to travel and see different places, something Sam Powell values in his role.
“I love my role as I get to visit customers all across the country. It’s always amazing how many different ways there are to crush, screen, and move different materials – I’m always learning something new. The best part about working with Onetrak is the teamwork. Everyone’s happy to help, decisions are made quickly and everyone has a voice”, Sam Powell, National Sales Manager Industrial Material Handling.
“Working at Onetrak is exciting and exceptionally rewarding. Being a family-owned business makes us flexible and very responsive. We have a great team and a fantastic support structure here at Hallam and throughout all our other branches. At Onetrak we like to make the work place a fun and friendly environment - We are like one big family!”, Trevor Els, Regional Manager for Vic, SA and WA.
“15 years ago, we took the step to expand the then Tasmanian business into Victoria. Since then, Onetrak has continued to grow into a truly national business with branches, staff, and customers across 6 states of Australia. Thinking back, the move to Melbourne in Victoria was a significant step in the businesses development as it paved the way too many future opportunities that followed. Hallam in Melbourne remains a significant hub for Onetrak’s national business activities with many of our key management, parts and product support teams residing there.
“Today I’m very proud to say we have built a strong team at Hallam and we are still focussed on building further capacity into our service offering in Melbourne to assist our Victorian clients better. Our business plan sees expansion of the rental fleet and our specialist product lines into the market. A service centre in the western Melbourne district is on track to be completed by the end of 2024”, David Hazell, Managing Director.
If you are interested in joining the Onetrak team there are currently some exciting job opportunities on the go. Visit www.onetrak.com.au/careers to view all vacancies. You can learn more about Onetrak by visiting www.onetrak.com.au or call through to your nearest branch on 1300 727 520.

Tigercat - New Niche Skidder
Introducing the 612 dual winch skidder. It is specially designed to operate in selective harvesting applications, extracting high value timber in steep or sensitive terrain conditions. The Tigercat 612 series skidder platform was created to manage the extraction function in challenging terrain selective felling applications, while preserving the value and quality of the residual stand. The machine can be equipped with a dual winch, a movable back shield and fairlead system, as well as a crane, and front blade tongs. The 612 is equipped with the Tigercat FPT N67 Stage V engine, delivering 155 kW (208 hp). Combined with Tigercat’s efficient drive system, the 612 impressively handles adverse terrain while minimizing wheel spin. A narrow stance allows easy navigation through tight trails and rough ground conditions. The movable shield can be used as an anchor while winching. The dual winch and moving fairlead system allow the operator independent control over two separate cables when operating in tight stand conditions. The optional heavy-duty crane and blade tongs offer even more versatility for extracting, maneuvering and sorting logs. The operator’s cab is spacious with generous sized windows providing clear sightlines. Creature comforts include a climate-controlled cup holder and dedicated storage. Key to ergonomics and operating the machine effectively is the Turnaround seat. Turnaround provides increased comfort, clear sightlines, and easy entry and exit from either side of the machine. The operator enjoys full control of all machine functions in any position within the 220° range.

Urgent EOI - RSIF Project Industry Reference Group
We are pleased to be in a position to kick off the 2nd stage of the RSIF project which has been funded by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications: Log load geometry and enhance vehicle stability (Static Rollover Threshold) tool and invite members and industry to join the IRG to assist with the final stages of this project.
This tool is envisiaged to assist operators with the following: - Improve understanding of the vehicle stability at the loading point.
- Expand stage 1 technology to define and measure log geometry and confirm the centre of gravity of the load.
- Simple and useable technology that sits within handheld devices to scan the log load from the rear of the vehicle and calculate the centre of gravity which will provide the stability of the vehicle against the minimum requirement can be confirmed for a Driver or Loader.
- Create a tool to measure a key industry risk that is reported as one of the most frequent cause of fatal incidents, and one of the most frequent injury-causing incidents.
Your involvement in stage 1 was integral in steering the design of the crowning tool. Thank-you. It would be great to have your participation again for the stage 2 - SRT tool.

Have you checked your fuel tax credits?
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is encouraging businesses who claimed fuel tax credits during the temporary rate reduction to check they haven’t overclaimed. Businesses who didn’t use the ATO’s fuel tax credit calculator may have been using incorrect rates and claiming the wrong amount for fuel acquired during the temporary rate reduction between 30 March and 28 September 2022. Businesses who have made errors will need to decrease their fuel tax credits claim in their current business activity statement (BAS) at label 7C (fuel tax credit overclaim) to avoid penalties and general interest charges. A common mistake is claiming for fuel that was only used in a heavy vehicle for travelling on public roads. The fuel tax credit rate reduced to nil for this activity during the rate reduction. To make accurate claims and get fuel tax credits right on your BAS: Fuel tax credit error example Mitchell acquired 10,000 litres of diesel fuel on 1 June 2022 for use in his heavy vehicle while travelling on public roads. He claimed $1,780 (10,000 × 0.178 cents per litre) on his June quarterly BAS. Mitchell claimed the amount by mistake using the fuel tax credit rate based on the February 2022 rate. From 30 March to 28 September 2022, businesses that acquired fuel for use in heavy vehicles for travelling on public roads couldn’t claim fuel tax credits. This is because the road user charge was more than the excise duty paid, which reduced the fuel tax credit rate to nil. In February 2023, Mitchell uses the fuel tax credit calculator to check this calculation. The calculator showed he should have claimed $0 (10,000 × 0.00 cents per litre) on his June 2022 quarterly BAS. To correct the overclaim, Mitchell makes a correction on his March 2023 quarterly BAS to decrease his fuel tax credit amount by $1,780. He does this by including $1,780 at label 7C (fuel tax credit overclaim).

It happened in Western Australia and it's happening in Victoria!
Thousands of regional people thrown on the scrap heap to satisfy misguided green ideology, which is killing our most renewable and sustainable primary sector.
DON'T LET IT HAPPEN IN NSW!
In NSW, the native forest sector contributes $1.1billion to the GDP and directly supports 8990 families. This is being threatened by misleading campaigns against the sector which ignore credible science and falsely portray our tightly regulated timber sector as reckless.
These campaigns are influencing policy which is damaging regional communities and leading to greater reliance on timber from countries which do not have the same environmental safeguards. Did you know that selective harvesting does NOT adversely impact koala density, nor the nutritional quality of koala habitat? This completely debunks the 'citizen scientist' theory about forestry and koalas which underpins their dishonest campaign to lock up even more forest in a Great Koala National Park.
Did you know that just 0.06% of Australia's native forests are harvested and regrown by law each year? This tiny fraction directly supports around 52,000 of full-time jobs and keeps timber towns thriving.
Did you know that the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change states that forestry is recognised as our best chance to mitigate climate change? Yet Australia's forest policies are dangerously out of step with international climate science and are turning our bush into unmanaged fire traps.
With the NSW state election racing towards us, we must act now! This issue has become a key election platform for political opportunists, but we can show the Government that our vital timber sector and the timber communities it supports are more important than unnecessarily locking up more bush.

Introducing Skills Insight – the New Jobs and Skills Council
For the interest of our members and readership we would like to introduce the newly formed Skills Insight, the Job and Skills Council (JSC) for a range of industries, including forestry and timber, with your members and stakeholders.
The industry coverage of Skills Insight will be similar to Skills Impact, servicing industries across the agribusiness supply chain including primary production, plants and animals, forestry and timber, as well as emerging industries around natural resource security and environmental management. We have also been allocated additional industries: textiles, clothing and footwear and furnishing. As a JSC, Skills Insight will support industry to address system-wide barriers and add value across the economy and all education pathways. The scope of work will be broader than training package projects, including projects looking at broader skills solutions and working with stakeholders across the VET sector.
Skills Impact is excited to be establishing one of the ten Job and Skills Councils and we look forward to working with our industries.
